Service
Chip Repair
A stone chip fixed early is a short resin repair. Left alone it becomes a crack, and then it's a new windscreen.
The job
A stone chip caught early is a twenty-minute resin repair. Left alone, temperature changes and road vibration turn it into a crack that runs the width of the glass, and at that point the windscreen has to be replaced rather than repaired.
We repair chips smaller than a 20-cent coin that sit outside the driver's direct sightline, provided the glass hasn't already started to crack from them.
What's included
- Resin injection repair
- Usually completed within 30 minutes
- Stops a chip spreading into a crack
- Assessed on site before work starts
What to expect
How the job runs
The order we work in, so there are no surprises on the day.
Assess the chip
We look at the size, depth and position, and check for cracks running out of it. Not every chip can be repaired, and we tell you straight if yours can't.
Clean it out
Loose glass and dirt are cleared from the chip, and an injector is fitted over it.
Inject the resin
Resin is drawn into the chip under vacuum and pressure cycles that push the air out, so the break fills fully.
Cure and finish
UV light sets the resin, the surface is scraped flat and polished, and you drive away.
Questions
About chip repair
Which chips can be repaired?
As a rule of thumb, chips smaller than a 20-cent coin that aren't directly in the driver's line of sight and haven't started to crack. Chips close to the edge of the glass, or with cracks running out of them, usually mean replacement.
Will the chip disappear?
It usually becomes much less visible, but a faint mark can remain. The main job of the repair is to stop the chip spreading and to restore the strength of the glass.
What if it has already cracked?
Then the windscreen generally needs to be replaced. Cracks keep growing with temperature changes and road vibration. Book the replacement, and if the vehicle has a camera we'll arrange the calibration with it.
